XSEDE EMPOWER

An XSEDE-wide effort is underway to expand the HPC community by recruiting and enabling a diverse group of students who have the skills - or are interested in acquiring the skills - to participate in the actual work of XSEDE. The name of this effort is XSEDE EMPOWER (Expert Mentoring Producing Opportunities for Work, Education, and Research). We invite the whole XSEDE community - staff, researchers, and educators - to recruit and mentor undergraduate students to engage in a variety of XSEDE activities, such as computational and/or data analytics research and education in all fields of study, networking, system maintenance and support, and visualization.   Read more >>

DCL: Share your thoughts on future cyberinfrastructure needs

The National Science Foundation released a Dear Colleague Letter asking for members of the science and advanced cyberinfrastructure communities to provide input that "provides a holistic view of the future needs for advanced cyberinfrastrucutre for advancing the Nation's research enterprise. UPDATE: VIDEO: Computers beat humans!

In the "Brains vs. AI" competition at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, a CMU School of Computer Science artificial intelligence program—"AI"—called Libratus beat four of the world's top players at heads-up, no-limit Texas hold'em poker. It was the first time that an AI beat the top human experts at a game that required deception and in which competitors withheld information from each other. Libratus ran on an XSEDE-allocated Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) system named Bridges to provide the vast amounts of computing and data needed to achieve this milestone.  Read more >>

SGCI a Level-2 Service Provider

The Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI), established in August 2016, became a Level 2 XSEDE Service Provider in January. SGCI provides resources, services, experts, and ideas for creating and sustaining science gateways. Gateways are web-based resources for accessing data, software, computing services, and equipment specific to the needs of a science or engineering discipline. SGCI is a collaboration among seven institutions across the country. Because of the Level 2 designation, these services will be available through the XSEDE allocations process as well as independently.   Read more >>

Run Trinity RNA-Seq Assembly Jobs on XSEDE from Galaxy Main

Researchers preparing de novo transcriptome assemblies via the popular Galaxy platform for data-intensive analysis now have transparent access to Bridges, a premier XSEDE-allocated resource at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center that is ideal for rapid assembly of massive RNA sequence data.  Read more >>

February XCI update

A new use case priority assessment that will drive the software and services priorities for the early part of 2017 is now available publicly thru the XSEDE Community Software Repository (XCSR). Also available thru the XCSR are new operational resource status pages showing comprehensive XSEDE integrated resources outage and monitoring information. XCI also provided new VM images with XSEDE's cluster toolkit for Jetstream research cloud users and documented new use cases for how researchers and scientists register and authenticate to XSEDE interfaces and how Service Providers (SPs) integrate their services and resources with XSEDE.  Read more >>

Teaching computers to recognize unhealthy guts

A new proof-of-concept study by researchers from the University of California San Diego has succeeded in training computers to "learn" what a healthy versus an unhealthy gut microbiome looks like based on its genetic makeup. Since this can be done by genetically sequencing fecal samples, the research suggests there is great promise for new diagnostic tools that are, unlike blood draws, non-invasive.  Read more >>

Student program and participation opportunities

PEARC17 is pleased to be able to provide financial support for some student attendees, thanks to generous contributions from XSEDE and STEM-Trek. Support is available to students who contribute papers or posters to the Technical Program. For all student attendees, PEARC17 will include a one-day intensive collaborative modeling and analysis challenge; a session on careers in modeling and large data analytics; a mentorship program; and opportunities for students to volunteer to assist with conference activities. Participation from traditionally under-represented communities including women, minorities, and people with disabilities, is strongly encouraged.

Blue Waters offering webinar series

The Blue Waters project provides a range of education and training activities for people to learn about petascale computing and the software tools and resources available to enhance their knowledge and skills. As a part of this effort, Blue Waters is organizing a series of free webinars throughout the year. The webinars will be conducted every Wednesday, with a few exceptions to avoid conflicts with such events as the Blue Waters Symposium, PEARC17 and SC17 Conferences. Most sessions will be an hour in length, although a few of them will go longer. Each session will start at 8 AM Pacific - 9 AM Mountain - 10 AM Central - 11 AM Eastern - 4 PM GMT.  Read more >>

Preventing blood clots

Scientists from Johns Hopkins University and Ohio State University have discovered a new method for predicting those most at risk for thrombus, or blood clots, in the heart. The critical factor, they found, is the degree to which the mitral jet penetrates into the left ventricle of the heart. The findings were based on simulations performed using XSEDE, and validated with patient data.  Read more >>

Comet surpasses 10,000 users

Comet, the petascale supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and XSEDE resource, has easily surpassed its target of serving at least 10,000 researchers across a diverse range of science disciplines, from astrophysics to redrawing the "tree of life."  Read more >>

HPC Summer School coming to Colorado

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from institutions in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States are invited to apply for the eighth International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences, to be held June 25 to 30, 2017, in Boulder, Colorado. Applications are due March 6, 2017. The summer school is sponsored by XSEDE, Compute/Calcul Canada, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) and the RIKEN Advanced Insti­tute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS).  Read more >>

GECAT project announces two new funding opportunities

The Global Initiative to Enhance @scale and Distributed Computing and Analysis Technologies (GECAT) project at NCSA has two exciting new funding opportunities. The first is to establish new International Virtual Research Organizations (IVRO) partnerships, and the second is to seed new international collaborations with existing NCSA IVROs. NCSA currently has IVROs established with a number of international collaborators and is soliciting proposals to seed new collaborations between international organizations and institutions in the United States that are Blue Waters or XSEDE resource users.  Read more >>

NCSA REU "INCLUSION" aimed at underrepresented groups

INCLUSION (Incubating a New Community of Leaders Using Software, Inclusion, Innovation, Interdisciplinary and OpeN-Science) is a 10-week software-in-research training experience at NCSA. In INCLUSION, pairs of students will work on socially-impactful research centered around open source software, guided by pairs of mentors. This particular opportunity is perfect for highly-motivated students of diverse backgrounds, including those from minority serving institutions (MSIs)—such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).  Read more >>

    XSEDE aids in overcoming limitations in studying energy, proving the impossible is possible in chemistry research as well as uncovering new information about DNA structures. HPCwire names XSEDE's project director a "Person to Watch" for 2014 and XSEDE-allocated Stampede supercomputer celebrates a successful first year.

    XSEDE aids in improving wind energy technology as well as advancing the study of the human impact of digital images. A new XSEDE-allocated resource for interactive, remote visualization and data analysis is announced along with a call for projects for the XSEDE Student Engagement program.

    Research done with XSEDE-allocated resources are helping to bring the "customers who bought this item, also bought," way of online shopping to university libraries across the country as well as providing a physical explanation for star formation. XSEDE enables another stride in biofuels research and teams up with I-CHASS to improve STEM curriculum. Also, XSEDE prepares to head to SC13 in Denver, CO.

    Research done with XSEDE-allocated resources are helping improve forecasting superstores and the efficiency of genome assembly. XSEDE has announced a new initiative aimed at making it easier to manage computing clusters and improve the ease with which researchers and students can use local and national cyberinfrastructure. Also, XSEDE and NSF release cloud survey results.

    Research done with XSEDE-allocated resources are enabling simulations that investigate molecular movement in real-time, and the use of large-scale image analysis to understand diseases. XSEDE is hosting Nicholas Berente, as well as expanding access to the Open Science Grid through UC San Diego. Also, XSEDE13 was a huge success, see all the conference coverage.
