Welcome, Stampede2!

Stampede2, the newest HPC resource for XSEDE as well as the nation's academic community, was dedicated on July 28, 2017. It will enable thousands of researchers to answer questions that cannot be addressed through theory or experimentation alone and that require high-performance computing power. Stampede2 is the 12th most powerful supercomputer in the world and the fastest at any university in the U.S. When fully deployed early this fall, it will have a peak performance of 18 petaflops, or 18 quadrillion mathematical operations per second. The system was made possible by a $30 million award from the National Science Foundation.  Read more >>

Decomposing Bodies

Before fingerprinting and National IDs existed, a system of anthropometry ("the measurement of man") created by Alphonse Bertillon was used to identify people held in police custody. Bertillon's system was adopted by many police departments across America in the late 19th century. Now, with the help of XSEDE scientists, Alison Langmead, professor of art history and director of the Visual Media Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh, along with art history colleague Josh Ellenbogen are analyzing over 12,000 19th cards from the Ohio State Reformatory and Ohio State Penitentiary to see what these cards of long-dead prisoners can tell us. New 3-D Simulations Show How Galactic Centers Cool Their Jets

Some of the most extreme outbursts observed in the universe are the mysterious jets of energy and matter beaming from the center of galaxies at nearly the speed of light. These narrow jets, which typically form in opposing pairs are believed to be associated with supermassive black holes and other exotic objects, though the mechanisms that drive and dissipate them are not well understood. Now, a team of researchers has developed theories supported by 3-D simulations to explain what's at work, thanks to XSEDE supercomputing allocations at SDSC and TACC.  Read more >>

XSEDE Cyberinfrastructure Integration Updates

The XSEDE Cyberinfrastructure Integration (XCI) team has released a new Discussion Forum feature in the Community Software Repository (CSR) to enable anyone in the XSEDE community to participate in software related discussions. XCI staff assisted in building a new HPC cluster at South Dakota State University using the XSEDE Compatible Basic Cluster (XCBC) tools, presented at XCBC tutorial at PEARC17, and is testing a new OpenHPC version of the XCBC stack.  Read more >>

ECSS Affiliates Program Begins with Cohort of 4

XSEDE has announced a pilot-phase program meant to give those in the advanced cyberinfrastructure community the opportunity to work with ECSS staff on cutting edge projects. The program is called the ECSS (Extended Collaborative Support Services) Affiliate program and was launched as a result of community interest. ECSS is a service that allows researchers with XSEDE supercomputer allocations to collaborate with HPC experts to enhance their project workflow and hopefully get better results more efficiently. Affiliates are non-XSEDE staff members who add to the breadth of knowledge in the ECSS program.  Read more >>

2017 XSEDE Campus Champions Fellows Named

Four researchers from American universities will work with cyberinfrastructure and high-performance computing experts from XSEDE and U.S. research teams to work on real-world science and engineering projects over the next year in the 2017 Campus Champions Fellows program. The 2017 cohort consists of Richard Gayler of Kennesaw State, Chet Langin of Southern Illinois University, Semir Sarajlic of Georgia State University, and Dan Voss of the University of Kansas.   Read more >>
