Student Engagement

The goals of the student engagement program are to prepare and sustain a larger, more diverse pool of undergraduate and graduate students to be future researchers and educators. This program includes training, internships, mentoring, and recognition activities. Students will be recruited nationally, with an emphasis on the recruitment of underrepresented students. Participating students will gain real-world research and development experience and be encouraged to pursue advanced degrees and professional careers utilizing computational and data-enabled knowledge.

Underrepresented student engagement is focused on increasing involvement in the use of XSEDE resources and services among underrepresented individuals as well as among students attending underserved institutions.

Students may become involved through the XSEDE Scholars Program, through the annual XSEDE Conference, through the Student Champions Program, and through other programs offered by XSEDE partner organizations.

In addition, faculty and staff at US institutions may request education allocations for coursework, workshops and training events to prepare students in the use of Blue Waters and XSEDE computing resources.  For XSEDE education allocations see:  For Blue Waters education allocations see:

XSEDE Scholars

The XSEDE Scholars Program is a year-long program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented minority groups and women in computational sciences. The program provides opportunities to learn more about high performance computing and XSEDE resources, network with cutting-edge researchers and leaders, and belong to a cohort of student peers. The XSEDE Scholars program is geared toward students in all fields of study whose research will benefit from computational and data-enabled resources including high performance computing systems.  Additional information is available at:

XSEDE Conference

Each year the annual XSEDE Conference engages students from around the country.  The conference offers tutorials, poster sessions, a competition, and access to all of the technical program sessions.  Travel assistance is available through an application process.  Information about the XSEDE15 Conference is available at:

Student Champions

The Champions program encourages students to work along side Campus Champions to motivate and excite researchers, educators and fellow students on their campus to take advantage of XSEDE's resources and services.  Students are encouraged to contact their local Campus Champion to learn how to become involved.  Information about the Champions Program is available at:

Blue Waters Student Internships

The Blue Waters Student Internship program is sponsoring 20 undergraduate research interns annually. The goal is to engage undergraduate students in petascale computing research and development projects. The program provides each student a stipend totaling $5,000, a two-week intensive high-performance computing workshop, and a one year research internship. This program includes support for undergraduate internship activities at any accredited degree granting institution in the United States. For more details see:

Blue Waters Graduate Fellowships

The Blue Waters Graduate Fellowships provide PhD students with a year of support, including a $38,000 stipend, up to $12,000 in tuition allowance, an allocation on the powerful Blue Waters petascale computing system, and funds to support travel to a Blue Waters-sponsored symposium.  Additional information is available at

An XSEDE-wide effort is underway to expand the community by recruiting and enabling a diverse group of students who have the skills - or are interested in acquiring the skills - to participate in the actual work of XSEDE. The name of this effort is XSEDE EMPOWER ( Expert Mentoring Producing Opportunities for Work, Education, and Research ). We invite the whole XSEDE community - staff, researchers, and educators - to recruit and mentor undergraduate students to engage in a variety of XSEDE activities, such as computational and/or data analytics research and education in all fields of study, networking, system maintenance and support, and visualization. The program provides a stipend to students and resources for the training of those students who work on XSEDE projects for one semester, one quarter, one summer, or longer.
