SDSC to Host NSF-Sponsored 10-Gigabit Ethernet Workshop October 18-19

Editor's Note: The 10-Gigabit Ethernet Workshop is highlighting technologies central to the TeraGrid's advanced network backbone.

Registration is now open for a 10-gigabit Ethernet workshop supported by the National Science Foundation and hosted by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) in San Diego on October 18-19, 2001.

There is no fee to attend, but registration is required through the workshop Web site at http://www.sdsc.edu/Workshops/10GigE/. Attendance is limited to the first 75 registrants. For those unable to attend, the workshop will also be webcast; links to the webcast will be on the workshop Web site.

The workshop will feature a live demonstration of current 10-gigabit Ethernet technology, with participation and equipment from Cisco and Spirent. Representatives from Hewlett-Packard and Nortel Networks will also be participating.

Speakers at the workshop will include Bob Grow of the 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, Jonathon Thatcher of IEEE, Marc Fishburn of Spirent, Matt Mathis of the Web100 Project, and Wu Feng of LANL, as well as presenters from SDSC.

The 10-gigabit Ethernet workshop at SDSC is designed to bring together industry and network specialists from the high-performance computing community to share information on:

• The role of emerging technologies like 10-gigabit Ethernet and the importance of industry-university relationships to NSF-funded TeraGrid.
• Current state of the 10-gigabit Ethernet standard.
• Engineering challenges facing manufacturers of 10-gigabit Ethernet hardware.
• 10-gigabit Ethernet standards compliance, testing, and verification.
• Goals for early adopters of 10-gigabit Ethernet.
• Complementary roles of industry and university research.
• Challenges of 10-gigabit Ethernet for university researchers.
